Kindermusik at Liberty United Methodist Church
Spring 2008 Kindermusik at LUMC is excited to offer
A Kindermusik Class for parents and
their students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, ages 3-6.
Classes will incorporate a musical education that will help stimulate both sides of the
brain, vision & sense of touch, while helping develop language and early literacy skills,
all while singing, listening, learning new ensemble skills and playing instruments!
With 30 years experience in developing early learning curricula and products,
Kindermusik curricula are based upon the principles of early development applied to
developmentally appropriate practice as defined by the National Association for the
Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Plus, the Kindermusik philosophy is rooted in
the work of early childhood development experts like Piaget, Montessori, and
Greenspan.
Four-year-old children who participated in Kindermusik activities for longer periods of
time are shown to have improved self-control—they plan, guide, and control their own
behavior better than non-participating children.
The Effects of Kindermusik on Behavioral Self-Regulation in Early Childhood Four to
six-year-old children in a Kindermusik class who met ‘low’ compliance standards
improved the equivalent of an increase from the 50th percentile on a standardized
intelligence test to above the 78th percentile. Students whose parents or guardians
met ‘satisfactory’ compliance standards jumped on the average from the 50th
percentile to above the 87th percentile.
Sampling of the Music Education Research:
Elements of music and reading are highly related in first graders. Students were
tested on various elements of music and reading and a strong relationship was
found between a student's awareness of pitch and their ability to sound out
material in reading--material that included standard language and phonetic
material.

Preschoolers who were given music keyboard lessons improved their spatial-
temporal reasoning. A peer group, who were given computer lessons, showed no
improvement. Spatial-temporal reasoning is the abstract reasoning that is used for
understanding relationships between objects such as calculating a proportion or
playing chess. Spatial-temporal reasoning is important in subjects such as
mathematics and science.

A research team exploring the link between music and intelligence reported that
music training is far superior to computer instruction in dramatically enhancing
children's abstract reasoning skills, the skills necessary for learning math and
science.

Fiddle-dee-dee We'll meet many animal characters in our books, activities, and songs—each specifically chosen for a toddler's emerging interests and physical skills. With silly, bumpy lap bounces we'll help toddlers develop rhythm while further developing their ever-emerging language skills. With a special stringed instrument emphasis in the music from class, parents can bring home the violin, cello, and orchestra sounds to help their toddlers stay happy and engaged learners at home, too.
Home Materials: Double CD featuring songs from class; two interactive storybooks—This Little Piggy Played the Fiddle and Animal Serenade to develop early literacy skills; Home Activity Book, and a pair of Fiddlestick instruments.
